New Song: “You’re Gonna Get It”

311 debuted a new song called “You’re Gonna Get It” at 311 Day on March 9, 2024. It’s a co-written track with Nick, Colin Brittain (one of the producers of their forthcoming album), and somebody named Elijah Noll. It’s another “Nick & Friends” special where he collaborates with professional outside songwriters instead of his bandmates, much to my chagrin.

I don’t dislike the song, but I do have some issues with it:

Beautiful Disaster Is Not a Good Opener

I love the song Beautiful Disaster. I would guess that I’ve listened to that song more than I’ve listened to any other 311 song. I love everything about it, especially the intro, the chorus, and the dual lead guitar sections.

But something about it just doesn’t work as an opening song for a show. The intro for the song works as a good opening (I’ve always thought the intro would make great walk-up music for a baseball player), which is probably why 311 thinks it works. But I think the dual lead guitar section right after the intro and the plodding, reggaefied verse that follows make it hit weakly as an opener.

Come Unoriginal

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the revelations of creative dishonesty that have trickled out over the years, even 311’s song “Come Original” isn’t truly original.

311’s Come Original is based on a dancehall reggae song also called “Come Original,” by Chaka Demus.

Mosayager™

311’s creative process after Stereolithic took a turn toward incorporating more outside songwriters than the band had used during the first 24 years of its existence. What if 311 hadn’t worked with so many outside songwriters on 2017’s Mosaic and 2019’s Voyager and, instead, took five years to release one album full of mostly organic material.
